VS Code extension 1.7: now on Open VSX, and AI agents can change any file
Version 1.7 of the MDZip Editor extension is out, and it's now on Open VSX as well as the VS Code Marketplace.
On Open VSX
Open VSX is the extension store used by VSCodium, Cursor, Windsurf and other editors built on VS Code. Until now those editors could only install MDZip by downloading the .vsix file from GitHub. Now you can search for MDZip in the Extensions view and install it like any other extension, with updates arriving the same way. Your editor needs to be based on VS Code 1.95 or later.
AI agents can change any file in an .mdz
Until now, the extension's MCP server let an agent read anything in an archive but change only the main document. Ask it to swap an image and it had to say it couldn't. Now it can:
- Add or replace any file: another document, an image, a diagram, a stylesheet, a data file. The agent can pass the content directly or point at a file it just made, such as a generated chart.
- Remove a file. The main document and the manifest stay put.
- Nothing is lost by accident. Replacing or removing a file is refused if it changed since the agent last read it, every other file in the archive stays exactly as it was, and after each change the agent is told about images nothing uses and links that no longer point anywhere.
The new tools work in VS Code's own chat and in any agent that uses the MCP server, such as Claude Code and Codex.
